What is a Ductless AC Unit?
A ductless AC unit is an air conditioner with an individual unit in certain rooms in the home. The visible interior unit connects to an outside condenser via a conduit. This type of system doesn’t use your home’s duct system to put out the cold air.
What is Central Air Conditioning?
On the other hand, central air conditioning has the air handler on the furnace, which sends cold air moving into rooms through your ductwork. You’ll also have a condenser outside, but you won’t see the system in the interior spaces, unlike the ductless AC unit.
How They Work
With the ductless system, the coolant passes between the condenser and evaporator/air handler. The heat on the inside of your home pushes out to the outside, leaving your room cool and comfortable.
When you have central air conditioning in your home, cool air moves through the air handler attached to your furnace and into every individual duct in the rooms of your house.
Cost of Each AC Option
If you’re on a home improvement budget, which many of us are, you should consider the overall cost of each option. A single ductless air conditioner unit may run you a few thousand dollars. On the other hand, a central air conditioning system is more expensive, and the exact price depends on the size of your home, your current ductwork situation, and other factors.
Which Option is Better for Each Kind of Home?
If you wonder which type of air conditioning system is best for certain types of homes, in general, larger homes benefit from central air conditioning systems, while smaller homes and condominiums can work with ductless AC units. The latter type of system will cool down smaller homes faster than larger ones.
