Essential Protection from a Silent Danger

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that can be deadly. It’s produced whenever fuel burns, including in your furnace, water heater, fireplace, or any other combustion appliance. Without working CO detectors, you can’t detect this silent killer until it’s too late. Proper CO detection is essential for every home with fuel-burning equipment.

New York State law requires carbon monoxide detectors in all residential buildings. Detectors must be installed within 15 feet of sleeping areas and on each level of your home. Air Design installs code-compliant CO detectors, tests existing detectors, replaces failed units, and provides emergency service when CO alarms sound.

Why CO Detectors Are Critical

Carbon monoxide poisoning is preventable with proper detection and maintenance.

Invisible Threat
CO is completely undetectable by human senses, only detectors can alert you
Multiple Sources
Furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, and other appliances can produce CO
Deadly in Minutes
High CO levels can cause death in minutes; detectors provide early warning
Symptoms Mimic Illness
CO poisoning symptoms resemble flu, making it easy to miss without a detector
Legal Requirement
New York State law requires CO detectors in all residential buildings
Peace of Mind
Know your family is protected 24/7 from this silent threat

Proper CO Detector Placement

Location matters for effective carbon monoxide detection and code compliance.

New York State requires CO detectors within 15 feet of each sleeping area and on every level of your home that contains bedrooms. Detectors should be installed at least 15 feet from fuel-burning appliances to prevent false alarms. Wall-mounted detectors install at least 5 feet above the floor, while ceiling-mounted units work well in hallways near bedrooms.

We recommend installing detectors near your furnace room or utility area in addition to bedroom areas, providing earlier warning if your heating equipment malfunctions. Interconnected detectors (where one alarm triggers all alarms) provide the best protection. Our technicians ensure your CO detectors meet all code requirements and are positioned for optimal detection.

If Your CO Alarm Sounds
If your CO detector alarms, immediately move everyone outside to fresh air and call 911 from outside. Do NOT re-enter until emergency responders say it's safe. Call Air Design at (516) 207-1891 for emergency HVAC service once the area is declared safe.
