Hard Water vs. Soft Water

There are two main types of water, hard water, and soft water. You may know exactly what type of water you have in your house. On the other hand, the type of water that runs through your home’s pipes may be unknown to you. Here’s some information on hard and soft water and the risks and benefits of each type.

What is Hard and Soft Water?

The hardness quality of water is determined by the amount of magnesium and calcium in it. If there is a lot of calcium and magnesium in the water, it may be classified as hard water. On the other hand, if calcium and magnesium levels are low, the result is a soft water classification. To determine the hardness of water, you can look at signs showing that the water in your home is either hard or soft. Hard water signs include feeling like there’s a film on your hands after you wash them, spots on glasses and silverware, mineral stains on your clothes after you wash them, and your house’s water flow may experience less pressure. As for signs of soft water, these may include a good lather when washing clothes and dishes, clean clothes with no mineral stains, and good water pressure in your home.

When looking at the risks and benefits of hard and soft water, you can look at categories including the following:

  • Taste: Soft water may have a slight sodium taste when drinking it.
  • Consumption Risks: A risk of drinking soft water may apply to individuals with high blood pressure as this type of water has more sodium than hard water.
  • Nutrients: There may be more nutrients in hard water due to the higher levels of magnesium and calcium, which can help you get your daily intake of these elements.
